Course

ITED 503

Name

Instructional Delivery and Technology

Semester

Summer 1 2008

Instructor

Dr. Bosede Aworuwa

Description

Explores instructional delivery models in traditional and non-traditional instructional situations. Provides students with hands-on experience in the design, development, and evaluation of exportable instructional materials for a selected audience. It also provides students with hands-on experience in the selection, design, and use of variety of technology-based instructional delivery tools for a variety of instructional conditions such as teaching in one-computer classroom, multi-computer classroom or laboratory, learning centers, teleconferencing, and distance education.

Projects

This course required me to develop a complete instructional package over a subject of my choice.
Description In this project, I developed an instructional package for a course teaching the basics of LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT. The package consists of instructional materials, assessments, an instructor’s manual, and a report. I chose this subject because I have a strong interest in LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT, and I wanted to choose a subject that I would actually enjoy teaching. I also just recently purchased an NXT set for personal use, and I developed two instructional videos for it in a course I took last semester. These videos have been received very well by the online community, and this encouraged me to contribute even more to this field. LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT is very important in the realm of education because it is such a powerful tool for kids and adults alike to learn more about robotics and programming. Through the development of this instructional package, I learned a great deal about instructional design.
Instructional Package Lesson 1 | Slideshow | Lesson 2 | Lesson 3 | Lesson 4

I created these lesson handouts for both the instructor and the students, and they essentially form a miniature textbook covering the topics I felt were important to know about LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT. They are by no means perfect, but I feel that they can be very helpful to those new to the NXT set, and they fit well with my style of instruction.

The first lesson uses a PowerPoint slideshow during lecture, and the lessons thereafter are to be conducted with the instructor using the NXT-G software as both a teaching tool and a means for providing demonstration.
Assignments

I created these assignments for the learners to complete during the course of the instruction. To be honest, I came up with these assignments in a hurry, and I know that I could have created much better ones given additional time and planning. The due dates for the assignments correspond to a course that starts and finishes within the month of July.
Test 1 | Test 2 | Test 3 | Test 4

I created these tests to measure how well the learners absorbed the material in the above lessons. Each test would likely be administered at the beginning of the next class following the class it was discussed. Each test is no longer than 10 questions while still covering the majority of the content covered in its corresponding lesson.

Some of the test questions could be refined or perhaps replaced with better ones, but these were my first attempt at developing testing material over content I created myself, so it has all been a learning experience.
Instructor Manual

This manual was created for the purpose of guiding an instructor in the teaching of this course's content. It contains (1) a general description of the instructional products, (2) overview of the materials, (3) instructional goals, (4) performance objectives, (4) description of media, materials, and equipment, topic/skills/terminology covered, and a description of possible classroom activities.
Project Report

This detailed report describes every aspect of the instructional package I have created. It contains the following sections: abstract, introduction, problem statement, goal statement, learner analysis, instructional strategies, media selection, formative evaluation, conclusion, reflection, and appendix.
Subject Matter Expert Feedback

I received this subject matter expert feedback from an accomplished robotics teacher. I emailed him my instructional materials, and he graciously took the time to go through all of them (except my assignments… I didn’t have them done yet) and provide me with an array of valuable comments and suggestions.

While I did not have time to implement his suggestions, I still greatly appreciate his taking the time to provide them to me. If anything, I will always be able to read these suggestions and go back and look at what they are referring to. This will in its own way serve as a “what not to do” lesson to myself and any others who find this material.
AECT Standards Met Design

1.1.1.a Write appropriate objectives for specific content and outcome levels.

1.1.1.b Analyze instructional tasks, content, and context.

1.1.3.a Produce instructional materials which require the use of multiple media (e.g., computers, video, projection).

1.1.5.b Demonstrate the use of formative and summative evaluation within practice and contextualized field experiences.

Development

2.0.1 Select appropriate media to produce effective learning environments using technology resources.

2.0.3 Apply instructional design principles to select appropriate technological tools for the development of instructional and professional products.

2.0.5 Apply appropriate evaluation strategies and techniques for assessing effectiveness of instructional and professional products.

2.1.3 Use presentation application software to produce presentations and supplementary materials for instructional and professional purposes.

2.1.4 Produce instructional and professional products using various aspects of integrated application programs.

Utilization

3.1.1 Identify key factors in selecting and using technologies appropriate for learning situations specified in the instructional design process.

3.3.1 Use appropriate instructional materials and strategies in various learning contexts.
